Incorporating Alice into a Summer Math and Science Outreach Program

Bloomsburg University’s Math & Science Experience. Since this was not specifically a “computer camp” because it had broader scope and appeal. Although there is known to be underrepresentation of women in computer science and engineering undergraduate programs, this program showed no difference between male and female participants with respect to the level of enthusiasm, interest or focus–Alice is gender-neutral. Session content included she- and he-builder objects, people and animal galleries, people methods, do-together construct, object properties such as opacity, ask user for yes or no function, Boolean variables, if/else construct, quad view, loops, vehicle, and shapes.
